Hurley Classic – Hurley Weir, Maidenhead 2nd December 2007

The Hurley Classic used a different format to the standard scoring at the other events. Each heat consisted of 10 paddlers, the heats lasting 30 minutes. The objective was to score as many big moves as possible over the duration of the heat. Paddlers went on the wave in approximate order, and would be whistled off after 30 seconds (or when the judges were bored, whichever first), but could have as many rides as was time for. The top 4 scoring moves were added together for each paddler to give their total; bonuses were awarded for combination moves. Ben was disappointed to not show what he could do during his heat, probably putting too much pressure on himself as Hurley is his home patch, but he was in a new boat and his deck was threatening to implode!

Alpkit Challenge / British Championships - Holme Pierrepont 6/7 October 2007

The following week was the next round of the Alpkit Challenge, this time at Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham. The format was the same, but the Boater X and Freestyle competitions were both held on the Saturday. The top 10 paddlers in the freestyle competition in each normal category, eg Junior Men, went through to the British Championships on the Sunday.

Ben got through the first couple of heats in the Boater X, but lost a hard fought battle in the semi-final and so didn’t make the final. In the Freestyle competition he didn’t do as well has he had hoped, but made the top 10 Junior Men to make the British Championships on the Sunday. These were held in The Muncher, not Ben’s favourite feature! In fact many of the juniors had problems with flushing. But some of them did manage to get some excellent rides in.

Ben in the end finished a creditable 7th.
