The Jefe Range: The Chico, The Jefe, The Grande
The original write up
The Jefe is coming in around 8'2" which is 4" shorter than a Gus and quite a bit longer than a Huck which is 7'7". Most of Johnnies references came from the Gus but he did incorporate some of the best qualities of the Huck, mainly that he wanted the bow to seek and stay on the surface. The hull is a nice combination of flat and displacement. We tried the super flat for a couple of prototypes and it was great on huge water like the Stikene but it was a little hard to get your hips back under you when boofing on shallow manky creeks so Johnnie found nice shape thats kinda in between. You'll notice the stern has a different look with the high edge. That edge is usually out of play but when you come off a big drop and your bow comes up and you need to move right or left immediately or when you are peeling out of an eddy and want to ferry across heavy current and the bow comes up this is when this edge comes into play it gives you a little extra bite .....it works awesome. The photos really don't do the deck justice (the gray color washed out the contours) but you will see the Gus deck in there. That shape/contours really makes melting a big drop easy and controllable. We also changed the position of the grab handles the bow and stern are both perpendicular to the boat and the swimmer recue handles are turned to a more comfortable angle. The stern and bow handles are also tilted to make grabbing them more comfortable.....these are little things but really ....really....nice changes. The seat is also new.....it is lower than the Gus seat with more (not extreme) angle in the front for more comfort. We also made it so that we can put more rivets in the aluminum plate thats on top of the seat the Gus and Huck had four rivets the Jefe will have 6-8 rivets...this is a definite improvement. The seat also has super easy attachment points located just in front of the stern wall which makes attaching carabiners super easy and quick ....also an improvement. The back of the seat is lower that the Gus and Huck making it easier to get into the stern of the boat .... We are super excited about this boat because we took our time in designing and prototyping making sure we got exactly what we wanted and didn't rush to market.
